You pay tax where you live
What determines your tax situation is where you reside on December 31, not where you work. As a Quebec resident you file both a federal and a Quebec return, even if your employer is in Ontario.
That's where the trap is: an Ontario employer withholds tax at Ontario rates, which are generally lower than Quebec's. Many people discover a balance owing on their first return.
T4, Relevé 1 and the tax transfer
An Ontario employer will give you a T4. If you also receive a Relevé 1, it will only show items taxable in Quebec and any Quebec tax withheld.
Revenu Québec provides a mechanism to avoid double taxation: part of the federal tax withheld can be transferred to your Quebec return. The boxes and percentages change from year to year, so confirm them with official sources or a professional rather than trusting an article.
A simple way to avoid the surprise: ask your employer for additional withholding, or set money aside each pay in your first year.
Health coverage and services
Your health coverage follows your province of residence: RAMQ if you live in Quebec, regardless of working in Ontario. Same for your driver's licence and vehicle registration.
Group insurance from an Ontario employer works on both sides, but check coverage for care received in Quebec before relying on it.
For families, Quebec's subsidized child care network is a significant financial advantage over Ontario — worth weighing when comparing two offers.
The commute is the real daily factor
There are few interprovincial bridges and they saturate at rush hour. A reasonable midday trip can double at 8 a.m.
The Société de transport de l'Outaouais and OC Transpo each serve their own shore, with some routes crossing over. Check the actual trip from your address, at the hour you'd really travel, before accepting an on-site job.
A special case: federal positions
The federal government hires on both sides of the river. A position in Gatineau is still federal, and the work location simply determines where you show up — not your tax situation, which follows your residence.
