Ottawa's tech sector reads as two distinct blocks. West of the city, the Kanata corridor concentrates telecom, semiconductors and enterprise software. In the core, much of the work orbits the federal government, directly or through contracts.

Two markets, two ways in

Companies in the Kanata corridor hire the way companies hire anywhere: a posting goes up, there is a technical interview, a decision follows within weeks. Most of them publish through the standard applicant tracking platforms whose postings we relay.

The federal side works differently. Internal roles go through GC Jobs, with long timelines and a security clearance. Contract roles go through professional services suppliers, where documented experience mapped point by point to the requirement usually matters more than the interview.

Clearance changes everything

A large share of technical roles here need at least reliability status, sometimes secret. Getting one takes time and happens through an employer, never as an individual.

If you already hold a valid clearance, say so in the first line of your résumé. For a supplier who has to staff a position quickly, it is often what decides between two otherwise equal candidates.

Remote work in this region

Postings advertised as fully remote but attached to Ottawa are common. Check whether the role actually requires days on site, since several public and para-public employers have moved back to a hybrid model with a set number of days.

A job in Kanata and a job downtown are not the same commute. Look at the real address before accepting, especially if you live on the Quebec side.
