The health network is one of the two or three largest employers in the region, and it hires continuously rather than in waves. The steadiest demand is in nursing, personal support and long-term care.

The main employers

The Ottawa Hospital, CHEO for paediatrics, Hôpital Montfort on the francophone side and the Heart Institute form the hospital core. Around them sit long-term care homes, home care agencies and private clinics, which tend to post more part-time work.

Many of these institutions post internally first. A public posting often means the internal competition came up empty, which works in your favour if you apply quickly.

Registration comes before the job

To practise as a nurse in Ontario you must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario, and that process runs independently of any application. Training obtained outside the province or outside Canada goes through an assessment first.

If you are registered in Quebec and want an Ontario role, budget for a separate process. The two colleges do not substitute for each other, even a few kilometres apart.

Bilingualism on the floor

A significant share of the region's patients are francophone. Institutions designated under the French Language Services Act have to serve that population, which keeps bilingual staff in demand at every level, from triage to administration.

Unlike the federal system there is usually no standardised test: the assessment happens in the interview.
